Some of My Favorite Building Exercises

We don't use machines, we build them.

“What exercise should I do to build (points to random body part) this muscle?”

This is one of the more common questions I get as a trainer because after a while the people asking this feel they have tried just about every exercise on their own and are looking for something else.

Now here at Fitness Revolution Rowlett we tend to focus on getting individuals to get better at big motions because we feel that this is what delivers great results when it comes to aesthetics; but it’s not to say that we don’t want to continue to bring up other “showy” muscles 😉

So I went on a bit of a video bender here and shot TWO of a favorite exercises to help build each particular body part. I must admit though that I do have about a dozen that I love to use but it all depends on the person and their specific goals. [Read more…]

Sit-ups Build Legs

Sit-ups build legs, not abs

Seriously you may challenge me on this but I want you to think about it. How many times did you do sit-up or decline sit-ups and have to stop do to your abs burning so bad? Honestly, I can admit very few really do experience an extreme ab burn during decline sit-ups, in fact most probably notice that their hip flexors start burning more than anything.

What you didn’t know about the Hip Flexors

First off your hip flexors are NOT just one muscle they are a group of muscles that are responsible for flexing the femur (thigh) towards the torso, think of bringing your knees towards you.Hips Flexors and and sit ups - Fitness Revolution Rowlett

If you were to look at the image to the left these are ALL the muscles of the hip flexors… if you notice that the abdominal wall is NOT one of them.

These are the PRIME movers in decline sit-ups and most other sit up variations.

So doing countless reps and decline angles only further continues to improve the functionality and muscular development of the hip flexors, not develop the abdominal wall.

In addition to this I have seen this further tighten the hip flexors more than what most need. Guys I hate to say this but your hip flexors are probably tight enough as it is and they don’t need any reaosn to get tighter, if they do they will just hate you for it.

What ends up happening it that as they tighten up even further they begin to pull your hips down towards your knees and if you think you have hip problems now just wait till those things get tighter.

What You Should Know about Poor Digestion and Low Testosterone

Side Note: I had someone do a guest writing series with this blog and a few others, so let me know what you think!

For men who are finding that they are dealing with low testosterone, you will find that poor digestion has a part to play in this complication. One way to increase the amount of testosterone a person has might include actually working on improving a person’s digestion. When they can do this, this can help them with a whole lot of other issues besides that of low testosterone.

Age has a lot to do with the digestion of a man. While there are many younger men who are obese, it’s when they are in their forties or fifties that it begins to be a problem. Men who are forty five or older and those who are obese will be two times more likely to have issues with low testosterone than a regular man. Besides that, there are many men who find that due to poor digestion and overweight, they have diabetes and high blood pressure which put them at a higher risk of having problems with low testosterone.

It is important for men to have regular check ups and get control of weight as this can have a huge effect on getting to the root of the problem early on. If they don’t deal with this as soon as possible, the issue of low testosterone could continue to be a problem that never gets solved. This is usually an indicator that something else is wrong. They could have adrenal fatigue or something even worse. Many of the conditions that could cause poor digestion can normally be corrected, and by doing so, this might cause one to see an increase of testosterone back to normal levels.

It is wise to talk to the doctor to carry out some tests and not to just blame this problem on old age. This is the main thing that men do wrong. They trust the doctor, but what many have thought is that doctors will point out that low testosterone levels are due to the fact that they are old. There are more things that could be the cause of this and this should give hope to those men who might have been told there wasn’t much they could do when it comes to this matter.

In addition to medication,  poor digestion can be healed through the consumption of natural supplements. There are some people who might see that this as a solution could benefit them. Supplements are easy to find and they are actually good for you as well. These are a few nutrients that work greatly to help you achieve better levels of testosterone. These nutrients which you will want to take in on a daily basis will include zinc, multivitamins, and probiotics. These are just a few of the many supplements that you can take to help you with the poor digestive system and to help alleviate the low levels of testosterone that you are facing. If you aren’t sure about what you should take, then please talk to your doctor.

Why you still don’t have abs.

This is part 1 of MANY that I’ll be doing dedicated towards PROPER core work 🙂

One of the most common questions that I get as a personal trainer is how can I get abs? I will say right off the bat that abs are built in the kitchen, you can NOT out train a bad diet, but this isn’t about the diet. This is about how I see many people doing crunch after crunch, leg raise after leg raise and not seeing anywhere near the development they want. So I apologize if this gets a bit nerdy but if you understand this you’ll be well on your way to getting those abs that you want.

What I’m about to share took me years to figure out; countless reps of crunches, leg lifts, sit-ups and other foolish ab exercises that I won’t even mention. I’ve been in the fitness industry for over a decade now and this information is over a decade’s worth of hard leaning.

Everyone wants them but how come they are so damn hard to develop!? With diet aside (though is my opinion its one of the MOST important figures in the abdominal equation), people are split up into two groups with ab work: first group does countless reps and spends hours a week on ab development. The second group hates doing them because of boredom or out of frustration because after being in group one they did not get the results they wanted. [Read more…]
