What is Starvation Mode?

what is starvation mode - fitness revolution rowlett

“If you don’t eat every few hours your body will go into starvation mode.”

We’ve all heard that phrase before.

Most likely you’ll hear your gym friend talk about how you have to eat every few hours or that your body will stop burning fat, you’ll go into starvation mode, your body will start eating away muscle, and you’ll quickly shrivel up and look like Christian Bale in the Machinist.

I’m warning you that I go a bit “nerd-mode” here, but let me start right off the bat and say this is complete crap and we’re going to clear some of this up.

Why Breakfast Makes You Fat

I’ll go on record to say that breakfast sucks. It, in my opinion, is the LEAST important meal of the day.

I’ll put it in bold letters…

BREAKFAST SUCKS

Oh boy, I’m sure I made some people mad. I can hear some of the criticism now…

Other trainers are saying: “WTF! That’s heresy!Breakfast makes you Fat - Fitness Revolution Rowlett

People: “But isn’t it the most important meal of the day?! This guy is weird… come on Stacey lets go eat a bagel and walk on the treadmill.” 😉

Do any of your know where the idea of breakfast orientated from? We grew up taught that breakfast was the most important meal of the day but who started that and WHY? Our parents? Who told them? Where did the idea of breakfast orientate from?

First the word breakfast just means “break-fast” duh I know, but wouldn’t that mean that your first meal AFTER sleep, no matter what time, is breakfast? What if I work a night shift get up at 4pm and my first meal is at 5, is that breakfast or dinner? What is I wake up at 8am and eat 30min later, is that breakfast? Or if I were to wake up and not eat till 3-4 hours later… is that breakfast? All of them are yes, breakfast just means “breaking your fast” no matter what time of the day you eat… its breakfast. In today’s society we have labeled that word as strictly a morning meal when in all reality it can be at any time.

Ok so why they hell did I tell you all that? Well it’s to get your mind in a different concept that the idea of breakfast is just your first meal of the day, whenever it may be, and NOT strictly a morning time ritual.  BUT… for this blog for fear of confusing you I’ll be referring to breakfast as your meal that is consumed within an hour upon waking. Intermittent Fasting and Blood Sugar

Fasting and blood sugar levels - Fitness Revolution RowlettOver the course of the past several months I’ve been getting more and more questions about fasting, I guess people think I know what I’m talking about lol. Honestly, the concept of fasting is very simple… shut your mouth people; just don’t eat. THERE YA GO!

As I see more and more the concept of a person not eating every three to four hours really freaks them out. They want and have an interest in losing weight but not eating at all seems counterproductive to everything they have heard over the years. I won’t go into that dogma of media and bro-science in this blog but the point I was leading towards is that we are under the impression that fat loss is hard. We are under this impression that you must be on a complicated diet of 6 meals a day so the concept of fasting must be difficult… (I’m thinking… dafuq)? Let me just say one more time… fasting is simple, just don’t eat. [Read more…]

Shoulder Pain?

Time for me to nerd out for a bit hereshoulder pain - Fitness Revolution Rowlett

Over the course of time I’ve been having more and more people coming to Fitness Revolution looking for questions on how to heal their shoulders. I have seen more shoulder dysfunctions this month that almost all of last year, is there something in the water here?

Regardless of the client or the case, I always do more research just to make sure that I can help this person get back to full functioning health as fast as we can. All this research has led me to become a bit more proficient in shoulder rehab and PREHAB work. [Read more…]

4 Things I learned in Sin City… among other things ;)

As I’m sure some of you may know, I headed out to Sin City this weekend for my great friend Justin Yule’s (owner of Fitness Revolution Chanhassen) wedding along with several close friends… who all happen to be in the fitness industry LOL. What can I say you are who you surround yourself with 🙂

Now what do a group of trainers do when they are let lose, well… we can save THAT conversation for another time but all of us of course sat down and talked shop in our down times when alcohol wasn’t flowing like water.

Talking to these other BAMF (ever seen pulp fiction?) trainers is always a blast because I get a chance to always learn new things, and its exciting to see the results they deliver and HOW we can deliver better and faster results. Sometimes I almost think it’s a competition on what trainer can cause the greatest change in a client.

So what all did I learn in Sin city besides alcohol is INSANELY expensive and I’ve never seen so much “paid” company in my life? A few things in particular really stick out to me:

Buff men and pink drinks…

To Eat or Not to Eat

So todays blog had taken me quite some time to write, honestly I must have written the thing a thousand times in my head and a few times on paper scratching it each and every time. Why? Well really this topic can go into so much detail that honestly I feel that I would be doing you an injustice if I didn’t cover all my bases and provide you with as much knowledge to allow you to have an educated opinion.

Now I’m just going to scratch the surface to peak your interest, I’ll save the really cool info for later blogs because honestly I could do a MAJOR rant on this. [Read more…]
