What is Starvation Mode?

what is starvation mode - fitness revolution rowlett

“If you don’t eat every few hours your body will go into starvation mode.”

We’ve all heard that phrase before.

Most likely you’ll hear your gym friend talk about how you have to eat every few hours or that your body will stop burning fat, you’ll go into starvation mode, your body will start eating away muscle, and you’ll quickly shrivel up and look like Christian Bale in the Machinist.

I’m warning you that I go a bit “nerd-mode” here, but let me start right off the bat and say this is complete crap and we’re going to clear some of this up.

Are you too FAT to gain muscle?

off season bodybuilder - Fitness Revolution RowlettEver heard of a “bulking phase”? This is where you see some gym rat that goes into a massive eating overdrive for a sole purpose of a caloric surplus to help with gaining muscle. Typically these people will gain anywhere from 20lbs to the excess of 50lbs during their time. I myself have done this where I had put on over 25lbs in a 4 month time frame.  Then after this bulking phase you diet down for the summer months to reveal all this new ripped muscle.

Come on – we have all seen or in some cases experimented with this tactic ourselves.

It originates from the bodybuilder eras of an “off-season” and “pre-contest” mindset. Remember, we as humans tend to think in the extremes, and you’ll see these bodybuilders put on some MASSIVE lbs during their off season but when they diet down they have now added some new muscle to show off on stage. The whole reasoning behind this is that it’s too difficult for the body to add a significant amount of muscle when we are not in a caloric surplus state, so if we REALLY eat we can just flood our bodies with ample calories and cause this growth spurt of muscle. Jeep Wrangler Chest Press

Rowlett Personal Trainer Jeep Chest Press

Good ol' Jeep Presses

I wanted to change things up a bit this weekend and instead of posting up a training article I figured that I would showyou some of the fun things that we do in our workouts. I know that the word “fun” can be subjective, but I still think its pretty cool.

Sometimes at the end of  a workout I’ll want to do something a bit different so the last few weeks my partner and I have been using his Jeep for some of our exercises. For those of you who are just now reading this blog may be surprised by that but for those of you who know me probably aren’t surprised at all. Now to those clients that I have that are reading this they are probably just shaking their heads thinking “Oh my trainer is crazy”… well maybe a bit 😉 [Read more…]

To Eat or Not to Eat

So todays blog had taken me quite some time to write, honestly I must have written the thing a thousand times in my head and a few times on paper scratching it each and every time. Why? Well really this topic can go into so much detail that honestly I feel that I would be doing you an injustice if I didn’t cover all my bases and provide you with as much knowledge to allow you to have an educated opinion.

Now I’m just going to scratch the surface to peak your interest, I’ll save the really cool info for later blogs because honestly I could do a MAJOR rant on this. [Read more…]

Champion Core Series Level 5

Even though its not December, still a cool ab shot

Hard to believe that we are already at level 5! This level is for those that have really gone through and mastered the previous four levels and by this point in time you should notice that you have a significant improvement in your mind/muscle connection with your abdominal wall, remember that’s the main principle behind the previous 3 levels.

One thing that you will notice is that in this level I’ve really started to focus on the “crunch”. Reason why? I can assure you that you have a much better mind muscle connection with your upper abs than your lower and spending a few weeks taking advantage of this and start building more of a ‘pop’ to your upper abs; this can really carry over to the next and final level.

Side note: The crunch is typically initiated by the upper abdominal but if you really want to test your abdominal wall coordination start initiating the crunch with the mid to LOWER abdominal. If you can do this your feel a whole new world in your ab training! [Read more…]

Champion Core Series Level 2

Now on to level 2!

I’ll keep this a bit short and sweet because the only real difference between level 1 and level 2 workouts is the addition of a bent knee leg raise.

The reason that we are going with a bent knee is that by this point in time you should be able to have a little bit more basic control over your abdominal wall and we need to turn it up a notch WITHOUT going too far outside your level of control. [Read more…]

Champion Core Series Level 1.5!?

Level 1.5!? But Travis, what happened to Level 2!?

Well slow down turbo and I’ll explain what I’m doing here. Its simple, I don’t want to overwhelm some people. I could on a jump straight to level 2 core work, which would be some starting point, but I want to make sure that you take the time to learn the basics before you try core my annihilators 😉

***Just wait till you see my annihilators, promise its some of the craziest core exercises you’ve seen***

Remember you can’t run the Olympics if you can’t run jr. high track first.

Champion Core Series Level 1

Wow so that last blog post was a LONG one! Iol I got a few comments about that it may have been too long… yeah yeah it was a bit nerdy but get over it 😉

So depending on where you were in your test will determine what level you need to start at in the ab workouts. I’m going to start with the 50% individuals because to be honest this is where I see most people lacking in.

As a personal trainer what a lot of gym goers don’t know is that the starting position in ab work is one of the most important things you can do. I mean we just don’t flop on the ground and do sloppy leg raises and crunches, just like you wouldn’t go pick up some heavy weight with bad form in a deadlift… starting position in both cases is EXTREAMLY important.
