So you want to drop body fat? Start Here

Want to start losing fat start here | Fitness Revolution RowlettDisclaimer: This blog is intended for the beginner NOT the advanced gym rat or seasoned fitness buff, when you have several years of successful dieting under your belt you think differently because your circumstances (athletic performance could be one) are different. This is step one of many to get a beginner to where you are at now. We are just trying to master one thing at a time.

The nutrition world is SO overwhelming.

Even I say that, and I’ve been in the industry for a number of years, so I know the beginner is just freaking swamped with trying to figure out what to do.

Many people that come in our doors just don’t know what to do with all the conflicting info out there, and I mean, its no wonder.

Do they do Atkins, Paleo, Low-Carb, Low-Fat, Not Eat after 6, or was it 7, do time zones matter? What about whole grains, ever hear of IIFYM, South Beach, North Beach, WEST SIDE!, Mediterranean, is butter a carb…?

$hit the list goes on!

Personally I feel this is why so many beginners just give the big middle finger to “dieting” and eat whatever they want.

After talking to so many people I decided to help clear the air of all of these “diets” and start with the bare bones science of this world to help YOU have the best idea of where to start. After that we will get into the nitty gritty of this world.

What I Would Do…

what I would do

Ever since I started my diet for my photo shoot I have had a NUMBER of people all of a sudden very interested in how I got so lean so fast, like I was doing some super secret ninja tactic that got me to drop body fat so quickly.

So I decided to write a short blog on EXACTLY what I would do if I had to get ready for any other event and I think you’ll be surprised at HOW simple this can be 🙂

1. First I would get my weight and bodyfat percentage

You can always find a scale and if you don’t know your body-fat percentage there are plenty of formulas to give you an idea online.

How many calories do you need?

How many calories | Fitness Revolution Rowlett

Not too long ago I made a comment on facebook about how I ran into a family at the local cafe looking to put weight on their son.

They were claiming that he could not put on any weight no matter how many calories he ate so they felt he needed some heavy duty weight gainer shakes.

Well when we decided to break down his diet he was only averaging about 1800 calories a day and MAYBE two meals were legit meals, the rest were just junk and crap calories.

For this 17 year old to gain weight he needed to eat MORE, heck I didn’t start gaining weight until I was eating about 5000-6000 calories a day!

Well I shared this story with facebook and I had a few surprising comments from women complaining how that is wasn’t fair that we (men in this case) can eat so much and have trouble gaining weight when most women (in their opinion) have slow metabolisms and struggle with weight loss. [Read more…]

My personal experience with skipping breakfast (pics included)

Breakfast sucks

I’ve said it once and I’ll continue to beat this in the ground that for fat loss eating upon waking up does not work for you trying to lose body fat.

I’ve even argued that eating every 3-4 hours isn’t necessary for fat loss either.

I know that this may go against a lot of main stream fitness media but hey if all that really worked we would see alot more lean gym rats than bloated puff balls with muscle.

This blog is really just to document my personal experience with skipping breakfast and just taking a break from eating on occasion.

Breakfast sucks

Month 1

Here is my back before I started this journey. Why am I taking progress pics of my back? Well to be honest my back is where I will see any progress first so this would be best and quickest way to asses this new style of eating.

In this pic was eating a typical bodybuilder style of eating at this point consuming 5-6 meals a day or eating every two to three hours working out 5 days a week with only two days of cardio. You can see that I do have some foundation there but not really any clean details or lines.

This was especially frustrating to me at this point in time because I lived by my meals and the clock, so it was ALWAYS on my mind. I’m sure some of you can relate to this.

In fact it’s the frustration that led me to take this step into this new style of eating.

Are you too FAT to gain muscle?

off season bodybuilder - Fitness Revolution RowlettEver heard of a “bulking phase”? This is where you see some gym rat that goes into a massive eating overdrive for a sole purpose of a caloric surplus to help with gaining muscle. Typically these people will gain anywhere from 20lbs to the excess of 50lbs during their time. I myself have done this where I had put on over 25lbs in a 4 month time frame.  Then after this bulking phase you diet down for the summer months to reveal all this new ripped muscle.

Come on – we have all seen or in some cases experimented with this tactic ourselves.

It originates from the bodybuilder eras of an “off-season” and “pre-contest” mindset. Remember, we as humans tend to think in the extremes, and you’ll see these bodybuilders put on some MASSIVE lbs during their off season but when they diet down they have now added some new muscle to show off on stage. The whole reasoning behind this is that it’s too difficult for the body to add a significant amount of muscle when we are not in a caloric surplus state, so if we REALLY eat we can just flood our bodies with ample calories and cause this growth spurt of muscle. Fasting and Muscles

Intermittent Fasting and Muscles - Fitness Revolution RowlettSlowly IF (intermittent fasting) is getting a bit more of a buzz in the weight loss industry, this is awesome because honestly IF just makes sense. Give your body a break from food; give it a break from having to constantly digest and breakdown what you feed it multiple times a day. The majority of our body’s energy systems are spent breaking down the constant bombardment of calories and is rarely ever given a chance to just work on itself.

Look at it this way; imagine that you are working 12-16hrs a day and never given a day off. Don’t you think you would hit a burn out period and things in your life would start suffering? Well if you’re eating ALL the damn time don’t you think that your body is going through something similar with you always asking it to breakdown calories? Give your digestive tract a damn day off lol. [Read more…]

Some Intermittent Fasting questions answered

Some questions that I had about IF hope that you read the last IF blog and it may have peaked in your interest, heck maybe you even went a head and ordered Eat Stop Eat (highly recommend it). For today I’m going to go over some of my initial questions that I’ve had when I began researching IF.

You need to eat every three hours to keep your metabolism up:

This initial question was the my very first response to IF. I mean come on we have all heard it that we need to eat small frequent meals to lose weight, this has been posted in just about EVERY website, magazine and news series about weight loss. I remember this was the first thing that was ingrained in my head as a young gym rat.

Ever felt like your day was tied to the clock with food?

So I thought, heck I’ll find plenty of research proving that small frequent meals promote weight loss and honestly its was very difficult to find research that really supported this. Weird huh?

You see when I did find a journal article that was cited small frequent meals as a case for weight loss I did real rescarch into the journal article, otherwords not just was was quoted to me but I wanted to read it myself… the entire thing. [Read more…]
