The Invasion of Body Snatchers, Skinny Fat People

Everyone keeps talking about the zombie apocalypse that is ever approaching on the horizon but I first want to address Invasion of the Body Snatchers - Skinny Fat People - Fitness Revolution Rowlett the silent epidemic going on right now.

Body Snatchers…

Yes body snatchers.

Whether you may realize it or not there is a plague in the industry going on of this trend to where we are seeing more and more skinny fat people

Men and women that use to be overweight lose all this weight then they are skinny fat.

Young teens and early adults seem to be the favorite target of this fiend.

These people are walking in not really appearing to be overweight but still look very “soft”; they are what we would call “skinny” but yet they still have a pudge sticking out.

Remember the days when there were true hard gainers? Individuals that walked into the gym that WERE skinny but they HAD abs!? I have yet to see many of those anymore; they have been taken over by the Body Snatchers.

Instead they have been replaced by skinny people with very little muscular development but more pudge in certain areas; most notably breast tissue (gynomastia in the fitness circle for men) and lower ab fat.

If you thinking that you may be a skinny fat person then you have been taken over… but at least you haven’t lost all of yourself to the body snatcher just yet!

In an effort to treat this body snatching skinny fatness and get those people fixed so we are better prepared to battle out the predicted zombie apocalypse. [Read more…]

My personal experience with skipping breakfast (pics included)

Breakfast sucks

I’ve said it once and I’ll continue to beat this in the ground that for fat loss eating upon waking up does not work for you trying to lose body fat.

I’ve even argued that eating every 3-4 hours isn’t necessary for fat loss either.

I know that this may go against a lot of main stream fitness media but hey if all that really worked we would see alot more lean gym rats than bloated puff balls with muscle.

This blog is really just to document my personal experience with skipping breakfast and just taking a break from eating on occasion.

Breakfast sucks

Month 1

Here is my back before I started this journey. Why am I taking progress pics of my back? Well to be honest my back is where I will see any progress first so this would be best and quickest way to asses this new style of eating.

In this pic was eating a typical bodybuilder style of eating at this point consuming 5-6 meals a day or eating every two to three hours working out 5 days a week with only two days of cardio. You can see that I do have some foundation there but not really any clean details or lines.

This was especially frustrating to me at this point in time because I lived by my meals and the clock, so it was ALWAYS on my mind. I’m sure some of you can relate to this.

In fact it’s the frustration that led me to take this step into this new style of eating.

Scary Stuff

scared - Fitness Revolution RowlettThe stuff that scares you the most is the stuff you should be doing first.

Normally I don’t deviate too far away from topics of fitness and health but I just had a big wakeup call recently that really caused me to take action on something that I have been terrified of for the past 6 months.

What that is I’ll save for a later blog but I realized how this closely relates to workouts.

One of the most dreadful work outs my clients have is when there is a lower body focused day or when we have to work to correct their weaknesses.

We always want to train our strengths, that’s fun, but correcting our weaknesses or areas of improvements is… well not fun and sometimes downright scary! It hurts and breaks down our tender egos that we have worked so hard to build along with our bodies.

Think about this for a second. [Read more…]

No Excuses - Fitness Revolution RowlettExcuses Make You Fat

This previous weekend I was out away from my home gym and decided to grab a few workouts at popular big box gym and it brought back some memories of some people that I use to train and work out along side that truly blew all excuses out of the water.

When I was about 18-19 I use to workout at this hole in the wall gym (Texas Gym) and I loved it! Some of the hardest workouts to this day were at that place due to the fact there was so much energy, testosterone and no BS attitude that just oozed out of that place. I could go all day and tell you stories of how hard and crazy those workouts were but what impressed me the most about that place is that no one there tolerated excuses. [Read more…]

How to get a body like HER

I want to look like HER - Fitness Revolution RowlettSo, who is “her”?

We each have one of those women that we see in the gym or magazines, these are the ones that you feel are the epitome of a fit, healthy, sexy body.

The most common things you’ll hear about these women are:

“I want to look like her”, “I want legs like her”, “I want her a$$”, “I want her abs”, etc… the list goes on.

The definition of “her” is always different for everyone but no matter what, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

When I first started to begin really making training a full time career I was living in San Antonio, TX, working for a big health club. For some reason, I don’t know why, about 60% of my clients were rather attractive woman, and I will say I NEVER complained. In fact it was a joke at my gym that if she was hot she was most likely going to train with Travis… like I said, I NEVER complained 😉

I had some reasonable success in getting these women into stellar shape, in my opinion some of my best physique work was back then. 90% of them had abs and amazing legs when we were done, a few landed some pretty large modeling deals and I even had one that ended up in Playboy (so not kidding about that). 7 Shoulder Saving Tips

shoulder savers - Fitness Revolution Rowlett

Why do I work on shoulders so much? Well, if you bust your knee you can still train upper body, BUT if you mess up your shoulder then you’re just about done in the gym.

The more shoulders I see, the more I realize that the bitch of the matter is fixing them when they are busted. Usually this is because the majority of the time it’s a learned movement pattern that has to be broken and re-taught. This blog is for those people that THINK they are starting to notice a slight twinge in that area. If you feel the twinge, then trust me… stop.

Below are some tips that I have accumulated to help keep those shoulders healthy so you don’t have to suffer though the aches and annoyances of feeling hindered while you have to let yourself heal.

If you are already having some shoulder pain I would recommend taking a look at this first: Shoulder Pain

Intermittent Fasting and Blood Sugar

Fasting and blood sugar levels - Fitness Revolution RowlettOver the course of the past several months I’ve been getting more and more questions about fasting, I guess people think I know what I’m talking about lol. Honestly, the concept of fasting is very simple… shut your mouth people; just don’t eat. THERE YA GO!

As I see more and more the concept of a person not eating every three to four hours really freaks them out. They want and have an interest in losing weight but not eating at all seems counterproductive to everything they have heard over the years. I won’t go into that dogma of media and bro-science in this blog but the point I was leading towards is that we are under the impression that fat loss is hard. We are under this impression that you must be on a complicated diet of 6 meals a day so the concept of fasting must be difficult… (I’m thinking… dafuq)? Let me just say one more time… fasting is simple, just don’t eat. [Read more…]

4 Things I learned in Sin City… among other things ;)

As I’m sure some of you may know, I headed out to Sin City this weekend for my great friend Justin Yule’s (owner of Fitness Revolution Chanhassen) wedding along with several close friends… who all happen to be in the fitness industry LOL. What can I say you are who you surround yourself with 🙂

Now what do a group of trainers do when they are let lose, well… we can save THAT conversation for another time but all of us of course sat down and talked shop in our down times when alcohol wasn’t flowing like water.

Talking to these other BAMF (ever seen pulp fiction?) trainers is always a blast because I get a chance to always learn new things, and its exciting to see the results they deliver and HOW we can deliver better and faster results. Sometimes I almost think it’s a competition on what trainer can cause the greatest change in a client.

So what all did I learn in Sin city besides alcohol is INSANELY expensive and I’ve never seen so much “paid” company in my life? A few things in particular really stick out to me:

Buff men and pink drinks…

Anatomy of a Diet Coke

diet coke ingredients

So a client and I were talking in our session the other day and he brought up how much diet coke his mother consumed in a day. Now she was starting to notice some health concerns, he was curious on if it was related to her addiction. Well I don’t know enough about her and her diet so I really couldn’t give an educated opinion but it lead me to think of how many people I run into that drink a TON of this stuff. So I wanted to break down what really was in diet coke and let you guys decide if you wanted anymore of it or not.

This is not a chemistry session, I simply just looked up the ingredients and did some web surfing. No fancy PI ninja tactics or cool formatting here, just telling it like it is.

Ingredients as read off the back of a can of diet soda:

Carbonated water: water into which carbon dioxide gas under pressure has been dissolved, a process that causes the water to become effervescent. Think club soda or sparkling water [Read more…]
